Artist Statment
My work is about relationships. I think about how humans attempt to relieve their isolated experiences of reality. I'm fascinated by the rehearsed rituals individuals use to communicate, and especially miscommunicate, with one another and I wonder what is the reward of all these performances bent on achieving a mutual connection. Communication is a physical and carnal impulse in my work.
On Nerds . . .
I like working with the subject of nerds because I like labels that are both viscious and completely acceptable in modern society. I also like exploring the trauma and ecstasy of social interactions. I've been watching little children a lot lately and seeing how the smallest denials and acceptance trigger huge waves of emotion. I think that still goes on as we get older, we're just used to it.
On Material . . .
I enjoy my material's physical matter and its ability to transcend that physicality through illustory imagery. This parallels my own bodily experience of interacting with the world - I both lose my physical ties to reality and feel trapped by them. Like a memory one plays out repeatedly, I want imagery and marks that preserves the pulse of a moment.
